Frequently Asked Questions

What is the GFA Discipleship Program?

The GFA Discipleship Program is a sacrificial, life changing year in our Stoney Creek, Ontario home office (near Toronto) that is based on the monastic pattern of prayer, study and work. This year will allow you to be reacquainted with Jesus and experience an incarnational spirituality. You will be given the tools to help you walk as a disciple of Christ through challenging book studies, spiritual disciplines, and a structured schedule in community life. You will learn from others who are on the same journey of faith, working alongside staff members who are serving in mission.

Prayer is a significant facet of this program. Through your participation in the GFA Community, you will broaden your horizons to peoples around the world, and be given the privilege to intercede in prayer for their needs.

Who is able to apply?

The program is open to dedicated Christian single adults who are between the ages 18 to 27 as being close in age helps them relate to one another better. This is the primary age group; however, we do consider those interested on a case by case basis and would love to talk to you if you don’t meet the specified age requirement. You may contact us at [email protected].

Where will I live during the GFA Discipleship Program?

You will live in a shared space with one or more of the other disciples and a house mentor. GFA provides furniture and housing essentials; disciples should bring their own bedding (twin-size), clothing and toiletries. You will share cooking and housekeeping responsibilities, so please come with a heart to serve your roommates.

How much does it cost?

The cost for the year is $8,200 which covers housing, food, and study materials to run the program.

We expect those coming as disciples to ask others to help with the cost by raising support.

Upon acceptance, we will send you everything you need to encourage friends, family members and churches to give toward your monthly needs. Contributions to GFA Discipleship program are tax deductible and receipts are issued for gifts according to our gift acceptance policy. www.gfa.ca/giftpolicy

Your travel to and from Ontario, and personal spending money, are not included.

Why raise support?

This is your first step in dying to self. Just as Christ called those who would follow Him to leave all behind, this is an opportunity to set aside independence and put your life in God’s hands. This also provides you with a team of people who can stand with you in prayer, allowing you to experience God’s provision through the Body of Christ.

Do I need to have medical insurance?

Yes, you will need to have medical coverage that covers you here in Ontario.

Do I need to bring a car with me to Ontario?

It won’t be necessary to bring your own vehicle as one is provided for the discipleship year.

Do disciples get any vacation time during the year?

Disciples get a five-day break to rest, which they may take any time after the first quarter of the year. This needs to be discussed and approved in advance for the sake of the Community.

Am I able to work a part-time job while I am participating in the Discipleship Program?

The nature and intensity of the program will require a full-time commitment. You will not have time to work another job. Please discuss any financial concerns you may have with us.

Am I able to be involved in a local church while I am in Ontario?

Those in the program are required to attend a church service weekly. However, it will not be possible to get involved in most cell groups, Bible studies or other types of weekly church activities, since you will be having regular Bible studies and accountability groups with your fellow disciples in the evenings and on weekends.

How will my time be spent?

Many evening and weekend hours will be filled by Bible studies, service projects, house keeping or other scheduled activities. In addition, there is a curfew of 11 p.m. on weeknights and midnight on weekends. It is important that you come prepared to offer all your time—not just office hours—to the Lord for the year. Some of the greatest learning experiences you have during the year may take place during these non-office hours.

May I visit GFA before I apply?

You are welcome to visit us at any time. However, this is not required as part of the application process.

I have more questions. Who can I contact?

You may call the GFA's office toll free at 1-888-946-2742, or send an email to [email protected].
