Reaching out to children and teens in Bhutan is something close to the hearts of missionaries Grace Sahare and Charini Mitra.
Gospel for Asia-supported missionaries Grace Sahare and Charini Mitra serve the Lord in a tiny Bhutanese village surrounded by thick forests and lush tea gardens, where most of the residents work. The people who live in this beautiful corner of the world are also loyal to the traditional religions that have dominated their culture for centuries. That’s why Grace and Charini were surprised to see them become filled with a hunger for God’s Word.
These two young missionary women teach Sunday school for the children. They also lead prayer meetings and weekend outreach programs for local youth. And by God’s grace, they are seeing a good number of youth and children choose Christ.
On one occasion, under the leadership of a local pastor, Grace and Charini held a special event for children and teens. The program included both teaching from God’s Word and activities such as action songs, cultural dance, storytelling, skits, Bible quizzes and games. The people who live in this beautiful corner of the world are also loyal to the traditional religions that have dominated their culture for centuries.
The Lord’s hand was on the program from the beginning, as He granted the women favor with local authorities so they could have permission to hold the event in a school that belonged to the local governing committee. The Lord brought 120 children and teens from various religious backgrounds and from distant villages.
Most of the parents attended the program as well. They were greatly excited to see their children on stage and enjoyed hearing from God’s Word. Children and parents alike were blessed as they gained a glimpse of Christ’s love for them, and their interest in the Lord was ignited through the time. Even as the children returned home, they sang songs they had learned in the program.
After the program ended, a good number of non-Christian parents asked to have Sunday schools for the children in their villages as well. Grace and Charini were then able to start a Sunday school in at least one new village, with more than a dozen children from non-Christian backgrounds attending.
Pray that each child coming to a Sunday school or outreach event will embrace the redemptive love of Christ—and for the Good News to take root and dwell richly in their parents’ hearts as well. And pray for the Lord’s continued blessing upon Grace and Charini’s ministry to children in Bhutan.
